Gut microbes in healthy kids carry antibiotic resistance genes

Friendly microbes in the intestinal tracts of healthy American children have numerous antibiotic resistance genes, according to results of a pilot study by scientists at the School of Medicine. The genes are concerning because they can be shared with harmful microbes, interfering with the effectiveness of antibiotics in ways that can contribute to serious illness or death. Environmental politics and climate change​​​

WUSTL political scientist William Lowry, PhD, has paid close attention to environmental issues for 25 years, marshaling what he learns each year and testing it in front of critical students. He has honed his class “Environmental and Energy Issues” so it is a white-water ride down a river of arguments and counterarguments that puts everything in context and lays out the facts — but skips the lecturing and fearmongering.

STL PREP event showcases opportunities for community engagement

Tours of the MySci Investigation Station, housed at the MySci Resource Center, were in full force Nov. 19 at the latest event of the STL PREP (Perception, Reality, Engagement and Partnership) orientation series. The center hosted a learning session for WUSTL faculty and staff called “Impacting K-12 Education.”

Early joins National Council on the Humanities

Gerald Early, PhD, the Merle Kling Professor Of Modern Letters in Arts & Sciences, has been appointed to the National Council on the Humanities, the 26-member advisory board to the National Endowment for the Humanities. Early is one of five new members nominated by President Obama and confirmed by the Senate.

The new “Courtesy is Contagious”  campaign reminds cyclists to give pedestrians the right of way and walkers to be aware of their surroundings.

Nomination deadline for Civic Scholars is Dec. 2

Nominations for the Gephardt Institute for Public Service’s Civic Scholars Program are due Dec. 2. The program now consists of both a classic and a study-abroad cohort. Faculty, staff and administrators can nominate sophomores for either group here.
